    Postgraduate Course in Fab Academy

    HOW TO MAKE ALMOST EVERYTHING

The Fab Academy teaches principles and applications of digital fabrication. It was developed to teach hands-on skills in fab labs, which began as an outreach project from MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms, and has grown into a global network of more than 500 labs.

Fab Academy instruction is based on MIT’s popular rapid-prototyping course How To Make (almost) Anything, both taught by Prof. Neil Gershenfeld.

    DISTRIBUTED EDUCATION

Fab Academy offers a distributed rather than distance educational model: students learn in local workgroups, with peers, mentors, and machines, which are then connected globally by content sharing and video for interactive classes. The individual labs are supported and supervised regionally by supernode sites with more advanced capabilities, expertise, and inventories.

    Course Directors

    Prof. Neil Gershenfeld

    Fab Academy Program Director

Director of Center for Bits and Atoms in the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and creator of the program “how to make almost anything” in 1998, that later gave rise to Fab Academy program, currently taught in more than 100 Fab Labs around the world.

In addition to his role as director of the Fab Academy program, Neil gershenfeld makes an online lecture every wednesday where explain the theoretical content of each topic and make a review of the weekly assignments with the students.

    Marta Verde

Fab Academy Instructor at IED Madrid

Creative coder, digital artist and maker based in Madrid. Her background is in Fine Arts, specialised in new media arts and digital technologies applied to the performance arts at UPF. Fab Academy program; expert in digital fabrication at Fab Foundation.

She develops visuals, interactive and generative graphics, dynamic/interactive content for lighting design, custom electronic devices and wearables, interactive installations for musicians, dance and theatre companies, artists, designers and arts institutions.

In addition, teached about technology and interactivity at institutions like IED Madrid, Ephemereal Architecture Masters Degree at ETSAM Madrid, Medialab-Prado, Makespace Madrid, Fundación Telefónica,Makers of Barcelona... among others.

Why study at IED Innovation Lab?

The IED Innovation Lab is an international networking centre focused on promoting a dynamic collaboration between disciplines, interaction with professionals, hybridization of concepts and prototyping results.

The centre operates around LABS where experts from different fields explore the future of design working with the latest technologies in digital fabrication, electronics, media production, virtual reality, etc.

It is located in what is considered the new creative district of Madrid, 20 minutes by underground from the other IED spaces. The neighborhood offers largescale workspaces where new designers can work freely, taking advantage of the premises’ great functionality.
